I listened to a couple of readings recently, of prose literary fiction and poetry. It was too hard to process in real time. Not like easy-linear-listening pulp audiobooks. I don’t get it. Do you go to these things regularly? What’s the idea? What do you get out of it?

I don't get it either, which is why I almost never agree to do readings from my novels. Fireside chat-style Q&As or ancillary talks seem like much formats for discussing the issues or ideas the prose/poetry wrestles with.

At least with poetry, some of it (depending on genre/stylistic choices) is effectively meant to be read out loud, sometimes only really functioning off the page. It flows better aloud.
