There’s a set of archetypes (boatman, barkeep) that can be confused with threshold guardians, companions, and teachers, but are really to be thought of as stagecoach types. They carry and coach people through specific stages. Your life chapter is their whole life.
The boatman learns the moods of the river. The people ferried across are a peripheral matter. The teacher is primarily focused on the student’s journey, not the river of (say) evolving 8th grade pedagogy. Which is not an interesting enough river to occupy a human life I think.

Teachers primarily focused on the student’s journey aren’t stagecoach types, but that hardly seems typical.

the river expertise makes sense, what is a barman's mandate?
