I always feel vaguely guilty taking a bunch of complicated thinking and simplifying it down to something very plug-and-play formulaic. Feels like cheating somehow unless it is something like a math theorem or a piece of blackbox technology like a chip.

I suspect it’s because in squishy real-world ideas, a simplification is also a hiding of risks and flaws. A simplified, formulaic packaging of an idea about say “leadership” is pretty much always a devil’s bargrain of sorts (at least if it’s any good)

Lossy compression still has a ton of value in a lot of different contexts. I feel bad when I compress photos to JPEGs but I don’t feel **that** bad.

Which simplification is most likely to remain viable in serving its core purposes (given its known operational context) and most unlikely to fail at adapting to (even asymetrically growing from) extreme shock in general?
