I always feel vaguely guilty taking a bunch of complicated thinking and simplifying it down to something very plug-and-play formulaic. Feels like cheating somehow unless it is something like a math theorem or a piece of blackbox technology like a chip.

I suspect it’s because in squishy real-world ideas, a simplification is also a hiding of risks and flaws. A simplified, formulaic packaging of an idea about say “leadership” is pretty much always a devil’s bargrain of sorts (at least if it’s any good)

Lossy compression still has a ton of value in a lot of different contexts. I feel bad when I compress photos to JPEGs but I don’t feel **that** bad.
