From now on I only do themed meetups, where someone kicks off a topic or leads an activity. That’s how we did early refactorings meetups — as field trips/activities/going to talks together/deep dives.
Then we got lazy and it degenerated to meetups for the sake of meetups.

This is actually Pournelle’s Iron Law of Bureaucracy applied to meetups. Call it the Iron Law of Meetups: meetups for the sake of X will give way to meetups for the sake of meetups.
