Big dramatic moves to break out of a rut basically never work. Your rut can make matching big dramatic moves to follow you. You kinda have to sneak out of the rut when it isn’t looking. Play hooky from rut life or something.

I’ve read that research shows otherwise. Taking up new habits is easiest with a change of scene where the old habits don’t exist. However, the rut lies in waiting when you return home. The momentum is difficult to maintain without considerable effort.

'It is ten o'clock:
Thus we may see,' quoth he, 'how the world wags:
'Tis but an hour ago since it was nine,
And after one hour more 'twill be eleven;
And so, from hour to hour, we ripe and ripe,
And then, from hour to hour, we rot and rot;
And thereby hangs a tale.' -Shakespeare

As if we are entangled in an elastic mesh. Large displacement in one direction causes a large opposing stress. Small and continuous moves can exhaust the elastic stress response. A materials analogy.

It doesn’t make intuitive sense but the way out of a rut is to backfill it with dark energy
