Most philosophy seems to be centered on one of 2 things: survival or self-actualization. Almost all non-religious philosophy is centered on the latter. Darwinism (as a philosophy) and existentialism are the only major philosophies of survival that I can think of. Any others?

Are you ignoring Norbert Wiener? Ashby? Shannon? Beer? Minsky? Kurzweil? 2nd-order cybernetics? Before Minsky was cryo-preserved he referred to "the
#cybernetic worldview" being correct. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdu16JAzgw8 …2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

Incidentally, you can be right about this, and it still says nothing about the core works of cybernetics. Because messy feedback loops control most human disciplines(those that fight over conflicting goals), it's still useful to consider those "cybernetic" domains.

Sure (my professional bg is systems and control theory... so this is not a throwaway opinion... also I wouldn't put Shannon in that set).

Shannon discussed these things with Ashby and Wiener. I consider Wiener to be the most insightful (if I had to choose) in "that set." But drawing a line around dead thinkers' ideas seems somewhat narrow-minded. I take the good ideas from anywhere and leave the rest behind.

I think there was good stuff in the original essays (never could get through all of the wiener book) and his technical contributions and academic lineage he established in control theory are above reproach. What I don't like is the bs forced intellectual "scene" that emerged

I came to "cybernetics" via politics. I kept noticing feedback loops that changed based on my interaction with them, groups whose goals shifted, etc. I read "Out of Control" early, and that pointed me to the other thinkers, including Hayek, Wiener, and

Yes, I figured that was your entry point into the subject. Very few people who came at it from the stem side have positive opinions of it :)
