Most philosophy seems to be centered on one of 2 things: survival or self-actualization. Almost all non-religious philosophy is centered on the latter. Darwinism (as a philosophy) and existentialism are the only major philosophies of survival that I can think of. Any others?

Incidentally, you can be right about this, and it still says nothing about the core works of cybernetics. Because messy feedback loops control most human disciplines(those that fight over conflicting goals), it's still useful to consider those "cybernetic" domains.

Sure (my professional bg is systems and control theory... so this is not a throwaway opinion... also I wouldn't put Shannon in that set).

I only consider the core of cybernetics to be legitimate and explanatory in nature, the portions Kurzweil refers to in "The Age of Spiritual Machines." Cybernetics means "steersmanship", & its core concepts are accessible through a variety of filters. (Biology, Law, Politics, etc)

This is a common view, because people rarely distill it to a simple explanation. Very few people give a concise definition of the term. Nonetheless, Kurzweil, Wiener, and Minsky were right: feedback loops control nearly everything that's "controlled," and the control is imperfect
