Humanities people like to lecture STEM people, but damn their clumsy figurative embrace of sexier math/science ideas is like 10x more cringeworthy than the ineptitude typically displayed in the other direction.

Agreed. As a general rule, if one is not capable of working through the mathematics of a scientific idea, one doesn't understand it.

I’m much more lax. The problem is more lack of technical taste than technical skills. I do know people who can’t do the math but have good tastes/intuitions.
