Unlike sports, in politics its what happens after the game that matters. 'New rules' affecting everything from pocketbooks to our consciousness are hidden, then promoted with team spirit persuasion, sure to please the tribe, even if their confused as to the motives and outcome.

It's why I think political scientists REALLY need to go back to thinking of themselves as political philosophers, critics, or speculatives.

I also think I should add that politics is probably one of the oldest activities humans engage in, so it makes sense that it's one of those things you're just supposed to "get", like love or appreciating flowers.

A better analogy might be that they pump up the crowd in order to *get on the field*. Then they still have to be good at the game (which is deciding how we all live, work, pay taxes, count votes for the next game, etc as a society) or their crowd-pumping-up effectiveness wanes.
