A radical view of UX is that all UX is decisions about what parts of the human brain to destroy by design. At its best it is brain surgery. At worst it's a bludgeoning.

this is reminding me of a discussion about porn, consent, ethics, etc. something like... we are all selling to / manipulating each other all the time anyway (alt: we are already gods!!,,), we might as well get good at it / skilfulness is the real thing that matters

One of the biggest problems is that designers themselves are oblivious to the context in which they operate. Their "blank canvas" is really a tiny space amidst the collective cascading constraints of team, business model, culture, capitalism, planetary dynamics etc.

Point being: designers don't even know what their "alignment of interests" are most of the time. Their apparent free will in decision making is predefined by a fraction of the total possibilities by virtue of the environment they're working in.
