Most archetypes, whether from psychology, mythology, trends, or fiction, are a strong function of context and say more about context than the people being classified/pattern matched. To develop context free archetypes you necessarily have to develop a theory of historical change.

A corollary is that the greater the rate of historical change (in particular in the form of institutional creative destruction) the more basic/context free the archetypes that pop.

The ones in my falling off the wagon article are actually context free since they are based on a theory of how institutions change.
