Left/Right makes it seem like there is a natural 50-50 split in the collective psyche. There isn’t. The human psyche is default right-wing. Varied liberalisms have acquired a persistent foothold only in last 200 years because they are an adaptive memetic mutation for modernity.

Feels like that’s in serious contention at the moment. Feels like “free speech” (with or without scare quotes) is the wedge issue that has recolored classical liberals red from blue. The other liberalisms are more unambiguously blue.
