You could even say that liberalism (everything from classical liberalism to social democrat flavors) exists in the epistemic cracks of conservatism like grass in the cracks between flagstones. It is sustained by the failures of conservatism in describing the world.

Perhaps the human psyche is default left-wing (reciprocity, mutual aid, tolerance) to their *in-groups* (family, tribe) and right-wing (barter, market-exchange, suspicion) with their out-group. Liberalism then works to institutionalize larger in-groups to national scale.

In groups are not egalitarian and haven’t been for at least 6000 years though

Counterpoint - today’s shared values were very progressive two generations ago and science fiction a century ago.

Aren't various liberalisms considered right wing? What is the definition of 'right' here?
-
Feels like that’s in serious contention at the moment. Feels like “free speech” (with or without scare quotes) is the wedge issue that has recolored classical liberals red from blue. The other liberalisms are more unambiguously blue.

I remember being de-facto TA for the computer classes in high school. There was this girl who left the room to have a freakout because of furries on DeviantArt. We ended up having a talk about how the future is only going to get weirder and she'd have to tough it out.
