Left/Right makes it seem like there is a natural 50-50 split in the collective psyche. There isn’t. The human psyche is default right-wing. Varied liberalisms have acquired a persistent foothold only in last 200 years because they are an adaptive memetic mutation for modernity.

You could even say that liberalism (everything from classical liberalism to social democrat flavors) exists in the epistemic cracks of conservatism like grass in the cracks between flagstones. It is sustained by the failures of conservatism in describing the world.

Feels like that’s in serious contention at the moment. Feels like “free speech” (with or without scare quotes) is the wedge issue that has recolored classical liberals red from blue. The other liberalisms are more unambiguously blue.

I remember being de-facto TA for the computer classes in high school. There was this girl who left the room to have a freakout because of furries on DeviantArt. We ended up having a talk about how the future is only going to get weirder and she'd have to tough it out.
