If I currently work in a non-tech field (accounting) what can/should I be doing to help bring about this world (aside from changing consumption patterns to favour such companies)? Just find interesting companies and go work for them?

Focus on management accounting rather than finance, so you can work on projections and risk (including risks of inaction and delay). Good accountants help invent the future faster.
