Many self-proclaimed centrists present as clearly partisan, but seem unaware of the fact. I suspect this is because they unconsciously equate centrism with balance, and instinctively work to prop up what they perceive as the weaker side.

If you're highly politically heterodox on dimensions that aren't usually considered in American tribal demarcations, you end up as a centrist by orthogonal projection.

Or they have a narrow view of what is possible. So they think the centre is between the walls that are blocking their view.
