Just hit me that at say $3/gallon and say 40mpg, it would be cheaper for a self-driving gasoline car to just circle around than park anywhere at more than $3/hr. At say $0.5/mile fully loaded operating cost it’s not worth parking above $20/h.
The loitering car cloud is coming.

But an AV could drive itself a couple of miles to a cheap parking zone and wait there. Maybe not easy in Manhattan, but likely possible in most cities

Not necessarily. I may want it clean or leave shopping bags etc inside. Or guaranteed 5 min away etc

Why would anyone build an AV with an antique powertrain? Their main market is short trips, and it’s a lot easier for a computer to operate an electric powertrain than a gasoline powertrain.

It's a bounding argument. If it holds for gasoline it will hold for EVs.

Most cars will be electric before most cars are autonomous.

Will there really be any gasoline-powered self-driving cars?
