Santa Fe chaos/fractals/IPD stuff is ~40y old.
Swarm theory, self-organized criticality, power laws, multiagent systems/distributed AI, is 30y old.
Complex networks/small-world/scale-free stuff is 20y old.
I haz ideas.

I think Santa Fe school and all other stuff above is big on ideas and stimulants but very poor on delivering anything of substance.

Sometimes you have to fart in the dark repeatedly before you come to anything substantial.

There is substance. There just isn’t much of economic value to exploit and may never be. Not everything needs an ROI.
I am talking about return on ideas, not narrow economics.
Lots of interesting toy problems but no fundamental advances.
