Ironically (given use of computers) the missing thread in this work is information theory and computation. The overlap afaik is limited to genetic algorithms and some stuff on empirical computational complexity (the stuff on phase transitions in NP complete problems)

We’re overdue for a new era of chaoplexity theories.
Santa Fe chaos/fractals/IPD stuff is ~40y old.
Swarm theory, self-organized criticality, power laws, multiagent systems/distributed AI, is 30y old.
Complex networks/small-world/scale-free stuff is 20y old.
I haz ideas.
