But... What exactly are the money getting spent at? I.e. if i'm out of gas in the middle of the night at winter, there are no payments that would warm the place back up.

my personal variation on this one is don't-sweat-the-small-stuff self-interrogation where I ask myself "will I even remember this happening next year?" and if the answer is no it's probably worth the spend. can adjust time frame as needed for situational relevance.
