How did he become the Russian president for 20 some odd years? He knock on a lot of doors, or something?

Nope. Talk to Russians who lived through his rise and you’ll hear a very different story. He’s terrifying because he’s a politically ambitious intelligence boss, not because he’s James Bond. Bonds are mere loyal dogs. He’s a dog whisperer.

The spin serves a purpose in impressing those who think that’s the skill set that matters. Legendary spies either die or retire with medals.

Some perspective: he took over a collapsed and hollowed out empire, hugely dependent on the vagaries of oil markets, during a period of cutthroat conflict and utter chaos. Given what he had to work with, under what conditions, it would be very, very foolish to underestimate him.

You don’t have to. You only have to attribute stupendous cravenness to half our politicians and astoundingly, destructively disturbed psyche to Trump. Putin merely needs A grade talent, not divine powers.

Sure it’s essentially a rearguard action. Russia will not be Great Again. That doesn’t mean it can’t drag others down to its level.
