"Putin knew he was going to roll over Trump before he even walked into the room;while both men are experienced liars,Putin brought decades of KGB tradecraft and manipulation to the fight. He's a wily head-gamer who rose to the top of the bloody Russian pyramid of political power"

How did he become the Russian president for 20 some odd years? He knock on a lot of doors, or something?

Nope. Talk to Russians who lived through his rise and you’ll hear a very different story. He’s terrifying because he’s a politically ambitious intelligence boss, not because he’s James Bond. Bonds are mere loyal dogs. He’s a dog whisperer.

The spin serves a purpose in impressing those who think that’s the skill set that matters. Legendary spies either die or retire with medals.

Some perspective: he took over a collapsed and hollowed out empire, hugely dependent on the vagaries of oil markets, during a period of cutthroat conflict and utter chaos. Given what he had to work with, under what conditions, it would be very, very foolish to underestimate him.
