Actually yeah, parallels there too. On paper, in 17th/18th c, Asian powers were more powerful than colonizers in economic terms. But Europe was ahead on 1-2 things that mattered. Russia is economically a non-entity now, but is ahead on 1-2 things that matter, like cyberwarfare

The biggest weakness of Russia is noth economic or governance based, but demographics... they have a far more severe aging problem than the US

The origins of that xenophobia are opaque to me, unlike the US’. Russia has always been pretty imperial, heterogenous and multi-ethnic, at least since the Mongols strolled through. Whence their racism?
