Actually yeah, parallels there too. On paper, in 17th/18th c, Asian powers were more powerful than colonizers in economic terms. But Europe was ahead on 1-2 things that mattered. Russia is economically a non-entity now, but is ahead on 1-2 things that matter, like cyberwarfare

The biggest weakness of Russia is noth economic or governance based, but demographics... they have a far more severe aging problem than the US

Strategically they are much better positioned in the middle of Eurasia to influence 4 key geopolitical regions (China, Central Asia, Europe). Gas pipelines and such depend on that. That's about it I think

Where did you get the impression that Russia is ahead in cyberwarfare? I’d argue that the US/West expose much larger attack surfaces due in part to openness & interconnection.
