Civilization is mostly energy, not information. I suspect all the architectural and engineering design docs for even the biggest cities would fit into like a few petabytes or so. But the energy required to turn pristine land into say New York City is probably humongous.

And gzip would turn that into a few terabytes

I was thinking a few petabytes after compression. CAD files are pretty big though they’re vector. Not sure why. Would be interesting to actually estimate this.

Hm, but information is bound to energy. Without information energy is a chaos of destruction, without energy information is a dead aperiodic crystal.

One way to look at it: Information is design, energy is operations. Feedback between the two (i.e. design constantly learning from operations) is evolution.

Definitely. I’ve found the below presentation insightful (French with English subtitles). Jancovici is presenting an extensive argument how every product and service we trade ultimately depends on energy transformations.https://youtu.be/pggA6_9aW5c

Du.. NYC is made of stories, not atoms or kilocalories. Big Civ can't exist without a preponderous history and/or mythos

A New York taxi costs more in information (driver) then it does in energy (fuel). Though maybe the metals in the car embody quite a lot of energy as well. Info too.
