Visualizing zero-sum institutional conflict is really hard outside of simple cases like board control. You could color code org charts by tribe etc, but doesn’t really get at how key tactics, like cutting off budgets, weaponized role transfers/reorgs, HR chokepoints work.

This kind of conflict is closer to admins and hackers vying for control of a computer than a traditional maneuvering spatial battle. Smooth/striated partly gets at it, but a lot of the functional striations are people’s minds, not roads or walls.

I wonder if you could figure that out by looking at emails and schedules. Could you figure out corporate maneuvers by looking at something like the Sony email files? I’m conflicted about using the stolen material but I have been tempted.

Data is obtainable and analyzable. What’s lacking is good cartographic theory. You can look at a chess board and assess conflict state at a glance. At least good players can, not me. You can’t do that with any representation of an org.

There seem to be a set of timeless moves that get implemented differently depending on convention and technology.
