You're limited by the length of supported query strings https://stackoverflow.com/questions/812925/what-is-the-maximum-possible-length-of-a-query-string … So useful to that extent. It's pretty common to encode state in query strings like that but generally it's not the state of the entire site (just search/query/etc. settings)

Encoding all the state in the URL like that also means anytime you link to it, the linking page is bloated which could get obnoxious
