One of the crueler jokes the universe plays on you is when you start hitting your own limits and learning of the ways in which you suck, you think, “maybe it’s time to help the next generation” and then you realize that’s a much harder problem and you suck even worse at that

Perceptions of being helped don’t actually count. Only actual assists in scores 🙂 When someone tells me something I wrote helped them, I think silently, “call me when you have something to show for it besides good feels”

Actually now you got me thinking about the point at which value is externalized. Are you thinking about it at the point of monetisation? (I’m visualizing, predictably, wannabe musicians building a scene and eventually getting paid)

Definitely not monetization. That’s relatively easy both to learn and teach. More like what I’ve been calling Arendtian action. Irreversibly birthing something new in the world, however modest. Making history. I am unlikely to do that, either directly or via assist-influence.

I'm just an old guy who wanders the docks and yells at shy onlookers watching ships depart, "embark, embark!" Never tell them where they should go. How would I know? I just tell them to take a risk and go. Sometimes they write back. Usually, no.
