I’m sorry but “spiritual, but not religious” is the laziest kind of premium mediocre religious position.

It might also be a way of saying something boring enough to silence smalltalk about one's actual insane personal journey to an acutely personal set of practices/orientations, in a world where people are routinely judged for their religious and spiritual practices.

Close enough anyway, though I would argue its utility as a conversational shield is a bit more generic than implied and covers a broader spectrum of cases of very deep phenomemological, cultural, scientific, philosophical exploration.
