It might also be a way of saying something boring enough to silence smalltalk about one's actual insane personal journey to an acutely personal set of practices/orientations, in a world where people are routinely judged for their religious and spiritual practices.

Sorry but I think that is wrong, although certainly applicable to some. "Religions" are institutions, and spiritual but not religious means you look for your spirituality outside of institutions, which seems like an excellent strategy.
