I read it in English, my wife in Mandarin. I think it's vaguely Shamalayan-y in that it does start as a different mouth-feel to the mass of it. I took is as a sign of authenticity that ChiSciFi has undertones that I hear but don't 'get'.

I felt this way too. It started choppy but it came to be something I really liked about the story. Gave the story a bit of a hypnotizing ambiance.

It is. The writing in Chinese is often cringeworthy IMO. Li Cixin’s talent is not in his mastery of Chinese.
