I can't see the left creating a fringe comparable to the talk-radio right though. The audience is too fragmented for that. Mini-saga of Maxine Waters suggests there will be no Limbaugh/Gingrich types. A new left power base will emerge in a more fragmented way. Speculations?

Won't help. The potential "base" is simply too fragmented and diverse for efficiencies of scale in communication of the sort Fox/talk radio enjoyed.

that probably has to do with the generation itself being the last bastion of true mass culture

IMO, talk radio is a unique symptom of oldness, not politics. General social pathology of talk radio listeners is loneliness.
