This is a deeply flawed reading of US politics, which makes me think it might also be a bad reading of what's happening in Indiahttps://twitter.com/shekhargupta/status/1010477531332427776 …

Ok.., Shekhar says pouring scorn on Trump (or Modi) only strengthens their base. He says instead that "liberals" should instead open themselves up to more "diverse views." Ill just say a few things about the US, since im an American and i think about it all the time

Trump and his ilk champion policies that cause demonstrable harm to others. And not just a little bit of harm—but massive distress and even death. Look at his response to the Charlottesville attack. Or his treatment asylum seekers asylum (NB: seeking asylum is entirely legal)

My president is sending positive signals to white nationalists. My government is forcibly separating babies from their parents. These are not "diverse views" that I should open myself up to. They are actions that cause terrible harm

So yeah, Sarah Sanders is an enabler and lying champion of Trump's harmful agenda. She was just asked to leave a restaurant. I assume Shekhar would say the restaurant staff should serve her, and further, should open themselves up to her "views"

Sanders defends the worst of all of Trumps policies. She chose this as her JOB

…for example: policies that cause harm (even death) to LGBTQ folks—like blocking healthcare for trans people. The restaurant owner listened to her staff, some of whom are gay, took seriously their discomfort at serving someone seeking to harm them, + she asked Sanders to leave

The owner decided that the cost of Sanders' hurt feelings were worth letting her know that this restaurant will not serve people who use the power of the federal govt to target them for harm. Honestly, as a gay person, I got emotional reading this. Best boss ever

Calling racist people racist is not what makes them racists. Naming fascism is not bad. If Trump's enablers want to eat in peace, then they should resign their deplorable posts

So, no…don't point to what's happening in the USA in defence of your argument that Indian liberals should be accepting of "diverse views"… especially when discussing not views, but rather violent actions against already vulnerable people in India

I thought you were Australian
There may be slightly more merit to the view applied to India to the larger number of deep pockets of unironic traditionalism. You can't assume illiberal bad faith as easily, just parochialism.
