just drop the axis then. there's no coherent spectrum of policy preferences along that defunct axis. we've just got blue vs red clustering now.

It's the most coherent, but it also results in pretty much everyone being on one side. Uncomfortable maybe, but true. LvR is not really useful when discussing policy or ideas, only temporary tribal affiliations.

That's sensible. If I were trying to have an impact on politics, I'd focus on micro-issues, looking for the most impactful issues, ignored by the public/special interests & hence fodder for lobbying $ & log-rolling, & (if nec.) supportable by bootstrapping on winning coalitions.
