So much of our trust in the law is trust in a shared sense of the spirit of it. The child-separation saga, from initial confusion, to current blame game, is driven by the fact that most of us simply don’t trust Trump to even grok the spirit of child welfare, whatever the law.

Or most of you for some reason trust the media to report Trump-related issues fairly, whatever the reality.

That seems like an unrelated dodge to avoid the issue. Trump runs the executive branch and has direct and total authority over this situation. This fact doesn't come from the media, it comes from the constitution.

I have been thinking a lot about what it means if we stop (as it seems) to have a "shared" sense on many things. no conclusion yet, but points to the need for a very different way of organising ourselves politically.
