I’m trying to start watching The Expanse again. The pilot is way too complex. I have no idea what’s going on. How come shows don’t ramp the complexity so you learn of only a few new characters and 1-2 plot lines each episode.

It’s like you need to take notes while you watch and pause every ten minutes to go over your notes to stay up to speed

I admit to pausing, rewinding, and rewatching certain scenes at least 1 or 2 times each episode just to make sure I caught everything

I’m just two episodes behind the current season and I still don’t really know what’s going on. Every five minutes I yearn for a “Previously, on the Expanse...” recap just so I know who’s who. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It does start fast, Like Battlestar Galactica the remake did. It becomes progressively easier to follow.

You should try this show Fraggle Rock. The first episode introduces 13 lead characters soread across 4 semi-interacting worlds.

Don't quit! Watch it with captions and focus on the big ideas.

I agree with this. I love it but I’d also read the books before watching the series.
