I am getting tired of reading about amorphous blobs of people with agency & goals. There is a difference between "the Republicans," with their official party line, and "the right." Same for "the left." Headlines about "the rich," and "the wealthy," or "coastal elites." It's dumb.

Discretizing the world into buckets is hard. Take constructs like "the global poor." Crossing the income line between $.99 to $1.01/day is not consequential - the scale is continuous!
Arbitrary boundaries are helpful to construct narratives. Narratives can be deceiving.

The boundary is actually $2 now and I think a lot of wonky people actually work on picking the right threshold for that one

However wonky they might be, the point still holds. There is no phase transition at $1.99. In fact, even $2/day is about lumpy payments over a few days averaged out, boiled down to that scalar measurement. The shape of that distribution matters, too.
The group is not homogenous.
