Why do people have such impoverished mental models of land? Even just shitty human history has several dozen major rich understandings of land: commons, wildernesses, entrepôts, roads, imperial hunting grounds, flood plains managed cyclically, seasonal nomadic ranges, mines...

...watersheds, riparian adjacencies, prevailing winds based, wetlands that support larger ecosystems, carbon sink forests... Olmsted was wrong on the specifics of oarks as lungs for cities but general view of land as a living, organic thing was sound.

Early in the industrial revolution industry went one way, to capitalist corporations traded on stock markets, and municipalities went the other, to uniform citizen cooperatives (1 resident: 1 vote) established by states. This caused centuries of stagnation instead of innovation.
