An underappreciated necessary condition for entrepreneurship is that the core work has to have enough of a unique “shape” that the meta work of building a business around it is interesting in its own right. Otherwise you get a professional services/consulting type sector.

This usually means that the domain knowledge compounds in a way that requires a special container to hold it. If the knowledge runoff from the operations of a business don’t require a special container beyond people’s heads, it’s hard to be interested in it.

There's a seriously fun aspect of learning how someone else's business makes money-understanding how the world works. Consulting draws you in with this, then pushes you out with the pain of coming up with a non-obvious, valuable deliverable (PPT, drawings/plans, etc).
