As a rule, don't listen to anyone who tells you to "take pride in your work." Usually, that means "I want your sense of self-esteem to be dependent on the work you do for me", which is pretty much emotional manipulation in its barest form.

As a rule, try to avoid working for missions that you don't get behind. Otherwise it may appear to be ok to piss your life away at sloppy gigs. Don't listen to anyone who tells you it is ok to not take pride in your work.

I guess I find it perfectly okay to not take pride in your work, which means you are free to not listen to me. It seems to me that there are plenty of traits around which you can build your sense of self-worth. Being a diligent worker is just one of them.

To me, work is not the same as paid labor (even though work can be paid for by others). Work is a substantial part of life, just like love, parenting and nurturing one's friends.
