There are 2 kinds of Indians in corporate America: spelling-bee Indians, and the kind that, if business were literally war, would be South African mercenaries doing “nation-building”. The ratio of the 2 subspecies often tells you everything you need to know about a business.

The South African analogy hits uncomfortably close. You don’t want to dig too deep into the historic roots of South African military talent . You don’t want to dig too deep into the historic roots of Indian management talent. In both cases you may not like the answers you find.

For the South Africans, I have a good idea, but for the Indians I can only guess that they come from colonial extraction families. Is there a word that captures the type for Indians?

It can be. Short for Swaminathan. South Indian names traditionally are just 1 name, with father’s name or village name prefixed as initials if necessary for paperwork. The pattern is changing to western style first/last though and Swamy or Swaminathan is usu cast as a last name
