For the South Africans, I have a good idea, but for the Indians I can only guess that they come from colonial extraction families. Is there a word that captures the type for Indians?

It can be. Short for Swaminathan. South Indian names traditionally are just 1 name, with father’s name or village name prefixed as initials if necessary for paperwork. The pattern is changing to western style first/last though and Swamy or Swaminathan is usu cast as a last name
