It is curious that the conversation around x-risks seems to largely ignore what I consider the single biggest one: epidemic loss of the basic will/desire to live. Phenomena like hikkikomori and falling birth rates are the thin end of this wedge.

it seems to be a corrective mechanism, i have a hard time seeing it ever progress to the point of kicking off catastrophic failure outside a closed community. and hikkikomori is uniquely japanese in much the same way as Ubasute was
