My experience, YMMV, is that those you describe deal with lows by abusing those less powerful than they are. This can be a PI abusing and exploiting post-docs and grad students or toxic clients abusing waitstaff and customer service reps.

Wonder about how many actually humorless people exist vs. people who only express (or feel comfortable expressing) their humor in certain situations.

Plenty by my definition. Many are smart enough to make jokes because they recognize the structure of humor without feeling it.
