It’s a way of signalling to / reassuring people that I can talk about heavy stuff without being a permanent mood killer

It’s a bit of a balancing act. On one hand, you don’t want to trivialize the serious thing you just said. On the other hand, you don’t want to be so serious all the time that people start filtering it as “that’s just how he is” +not take it srsly any more. keep em on their toes
