My rule of thumb has always been that you should understand one level of abstraction below where you are working. Work with HTTP? Know the fundamentals of TCP. Write Ruby? Know a bit of C. Work with EC2? Know how to boot a physical server. Saves so many headaches.

This is not really true. Books are not sums of chapter length posts. That’s why I only claim 1 book though I have 9 book-length things on amazon. Technically books, but spiritually not. 1 abstraction level below ia book is a *single* essay or better still, a talk, or a course.

I would have agreed until BASB book. I'm finding incremental episodes, like software updates, is a fantastic way of developing a Big Idea. Of course, it's only possible because I have the course and its learnings
