I like everything I've seen of Mastodon so far (exact opposite of reaction I had to Ello). Seems like a pragmatic, non-snowflake design with genuinely interesting diffs from twitter. I suspect its main weakness is that federation is simply hard on social design instincts

I thought you were referring to the prog-metal band for a second. I jumped on Ello a couple of years back. Didn't go anywhere. I'll take a look at Mastodon. Thanks.

Take a look at mokum.place. It has different approach to threads (posts + 1-level comments + backlinks + hashtags), but does not turn into pure blog platform. Also, long-form "texts" are possible. No federation!
