Brains are amazing. Our lab demonstrates that single human layer 2/3 neurons can compute the XOR operation. Never seen before in any neuron in any other species. Out now in @sciencemagazine. Congrats Albert, Tim @mattlark @YiotaPoirazi & COhttps://science.sciencemag.org/content/367/6473/83 …

1/ The XOR function (given two predicates A and B, XOR(A,B) = T if A=T and B=F, or vice versa) has been a focus for computational neuroscience since Minsky and Papert showed that a single linear perceptron was incapable of learning it.
-
2/ Given the foundational similarity of linear perceptions to the neural units in modern artificial neural networks (ANN), the ability of single human neural neurons to do XOR may challenge ANN as an explanation of human cognition.

Neurons act like 2 layer neural networks in animals. The cell body can fire, but also the dendrites can have a different type of action potential. In mice the activation function for the dendrites looks like relu. In humans it looks like relu that dips back down at some point.
