I am so disgusted by the Republican Party today. Angry and sad, also—but mostly disgusted. They have given up on American democracy; those remaining in the party or still in office who pretend otherwise are just as guilty of their colleagues' sedition. All of them are complicit.
For years, we've been worrying that the GOP was sliding toward authoritarianism. Yesterday, it arrived. A mob, encouraged by the president, stormed the Capitol to prevent a peaceful transition of power. That's not something we can look past, forgive, or forget.
Did it arrive yesterday? Or April 2016 when Trump secured the nomination? August 2016 at his convention speech ("Only I"). August 2017 in Charlottesville? August 2020 in Lansing, MI?
So few arrests yesterday.
At what point is propaganda media held responsible? What are the @FCC rules? Can these sham sites (Fox, Newsmax) be allowed to continue as they are when they clearly spout lies and conspiracy theories? Or is the mantle of “opinion” enough?
A lot of hands are going to wave about reforming the GOP. It's not possible. The Republican Party is beyond reform and redemption. For the future of this democracy, high-profile Republicans need to set the example by leaving and renouncing the party.
Investigate as deep as possible. What links do rioters have with WH. Role of Giuliani. Who financed it. What are their relations with Congress, Media? Why did police open gates? Is there a Fifth Column?
The Party of Trump is laughing its ass off today at the majority that doesn't support his behavior. #MAGA @realDonaldTrump @gop
