It feels too casual somehow to say I “miss” this view. Maybe saying I feel homesick for it gets a little closer. Beauty like this sticks with you somewhere deep.

I realized today I missed over 25 episodes of while I was out in the Arctic Ocean and somehow nothing illustrates so well how overwhelming it is to step back on land. 25 days of news waiting to be listened to. Gulp. ⁦⁦⁦⁦

One of the oddest moments of the trip for me was when we met up with the Polarstern (the other ship) so that the scientists could officially decide on the ice floe they would pick. It was very strange to suddenly have a neighbor in the endless expanse of ice.

What did we do for fun all those weeks without internet or anywhere to go? One entertainment option was a competitive solitaire game called Snerts that I learned in Alaska and that quickly took the ship by storm. Some nights we played until 2 am..

Said goodbye to today and it was a heartbreaker! This woman has shared the same tiny room on a ship with me for almost 40 days and tbh you could sign me up for 40 more. Such a wonderful journalist and friend!

One of my favorite moments of the trip was the night in late September that we drove through this vast ice floe. It seemed to go all the way to the horizon. And the sounds it made! I can't put into words all the things it made me feel but humbled was one.

What is there to say about the first few days we were in the ice? It was like arriving on the moon. I'd been on sea ice before -- that ice attaches to the coast of Alaska -- but to look in every direction and see nothing but ice... it made some big waves in me.

of course it’s the SECOND I step off the ship where I was trapped in the ice with a bunch of people for a month that I start to get a cold. Thankfully I came prepared with about a pound of vitamin c and throat coat tea!

About 5 days after we left, we arrived at the edge of the sea ice. It happened late at night (actually while we were having a party!) Everyone ran outside to look. First it was just bits and pieces but by the morning we were in a whole new incredible landscape

  11. 30. lis 2019.

A few days into the trip we got WhatsApp - basically our only link to the outside world besides an intermittent shared email account. But we only got it in a few of the common rooms, which sometimes meant there were more people than seats in the lounge...

I'd never been out in the open sea before and the first day the ship hit waves was truly bizarre. You weave as you try to walk down the hall. Your brain feels like it's sloshing around in your skull. I got used to it pretty quick but a few people didn't feel great.

Though I found it personally very gratifying to be without internet, I do wish I'd been able to share photos as we went along. My jaw was basically on the floor every day. So... belatedly, here are some highlights. First up: the day we left Tromø.

Here’s some bonus footage from my second attempt to connect to ⁦⁩ for an interview. It took us 3 tries before the line was good enough! Ocean radio problems... ⁦

Phew. For the past 38 days as I've been out reporting on the mission, this has been my view. Living without internet was AWESOME, but I'm excited to have it again so I can start sharing my stories from this adventure with all of you. Keep your radios on!

And much to my delight, Alaskans and Katie Gavenus are here too!

And we’re off! Following behind the Polarstern on assisting Russian icebreaker Akademik Federov which will help set up a distributed network of equipment on the ice.

  18. 19. ruj 2019.

And of course I immediately found my way to the Alaskans on the Polarstern deck.

The expedition is about to send this ship out into the central Arctic Ocean for a WHOLE YEAR. They’re collecting a trove of data about an extremely under-researched area to improve climate models. And I’ll be going along to cover the first month or so for !
