Why would Uber want to lend to anyone that couldn’t pay them back?

To lock them in to driving for Uber and not another platform, if they had a “bonus” of 10% of your earnings going toward paying down the loan it would be hard to quit them

I’m surprised it’s not already illegal for for an employer to offer a loan with interest to their employees? Seems like a ripe situation for exploitation.

Thanks, I was about to quote that too. Sad to see history repeating itself.

Peonage Abolition Act of 1867 declares that holding any person to service or labor under the peonage system is unlawful and forever prohibited. It defines peonage as the "voluntary or involuntary service or labor of any persons . . . in liquidation of any debt or obligation."
-
The drivers won't "owe labor" to Uber; they will "voluntarily purchase" taxi signs or something that Uber will require to stay in the system on a rent-to-own basis, and then they can take out an Uber payday loan at 300% to pay the exorbitant rental. It's COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
