I am interested in formal approaches to complex systems, where syntax meets dynamics and learning.

[1/2] Now that the ingenious has posted linkages that compute both squares and cubes, I thought it would be fun to reverse-engineer the squaring one. If you want to work through this in detail yourself, note that all lengths are multiples of 1/16. The magic here…

I'm excited by how well this activity worked today. Following a research idea, I faded out an example until kids tried it on their own. Surprised by how productively challenging it was. How Fading Worked Solution Steps Works — A Cognitive Load Perspective

10 years ago science showed there are 15 known Earth tipping elements that regulate the state of the Planet. Today we present findings that 9 of these 15 systems are on the move. There is now scientific support for declaring a state of Planetary Emergency

Ron Milo did it again 👇 Autotrophic growth of E. coli on CO2 as sole C source. True, with a little help of formate to generate reductive currency, but still an awesome breakthrough 👏

There have been other recent wins for privacy: most notably, the GDPR. But consumer privacy regulation can only really succeed if it creates incentives that reshape the market. So it's reassuring to see privacy-focused tech companies flourish.

periodic phenomena (vibrations, tremors, mood swings?) often arise from a [supercritical] Hopf bifurcation, in which a spiral sink becomes a spiral source, spawning an attracting limit cycle as the parameter passes the critical value 1/4

This is a thread about the most interesting subject I learned recently. It started when I I read the paper “How Complex Systems Fail”. Like many others encountering it, I felt it was the most insightful four pages ever written about software engineering
